She ran.
She ran as fast as she could, following her shadow that was cast before her by the fires she ran from. She was faster, but it was hard to run while carrying such delicate cargo.
Why did it have to be like this?
Why did they have to be like this?
Everything was fine. Susanna and Samuel had a beautiful healthy baby boy. Something was a little off about him, but that didn’t stop their endless love.
When the farm animals started to disappear is when the troubles began. At first it was just a couple chickens and turkeys. Probably just the foxes. Then it was the pigs. So what, just the wolves. Then went the cows and soon after horses. A baby vampire's thirst is hard to satisfy.
They denied everything, but the small bloody footsteps left in stone said different. They had to run.
Samuel tried talking to the towns folk. It bought them some time to make it out the back and into the forest, but it wasn’t enough.
Susanna had finally put some distance between her and the mob that hunted them. She stopped by a tree in a small clearing and began to climb. Once she was high enough she opened her satchel and pulled out her precious cargo. A small orange bat whose ears were too big for his head.
He desperately gripped to his mothers hand as she pulled them apart, successfully placing him on the branch. She knew what needed to be done.
“Stay here” she said, climbing back down the tree. The bat tried to follow. “No. No you have to stay” she pushed him backwards onto the branch. “Stay small and hide. I’ll be back, I promise”
She ran. The mob had caught up to her. She led them away from the tree and deeper into the forest.
She ran.
He waited.
